  • Oral History Project Learn how to create an oral history project and bring the past alive through interviews of those who have lived through important periods of history.
  • North Carolina and the Civil War Meet some of your fellow citizens from the past who experienced and endured the American Civil War through stories, artifacts and images of North Carolinians who lived, served, and sacrificed all during the conflict.
  • Lesson plan: Chronology: The time of my life In their study of chronology the students will use personal timelines and an activity sheet to demonstrate the importance of intact information to achieve accuracy, and compare and contrast their timelines with the chronological information contained in a stratified archaeological site.
  • Lesson plan: Learn about your county This activity will allow fourth grade students in North Carolina to learn more about the counties that surround their home county. Using online images, students will create a multimedia presentation to share with others.
  • Lesson plan: North Carolina living through photos, then and now Students will examine historical photographs of North Carolinians at work or in social settings. They will develop and share skills of “reading” photographs. Then they will use these skills to identify “historical clues” in a photo, and draw their own version of the same person or people in North Carolina today.
  • Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail This historic trail follows the Revolutionary War route of Patriot militia men from Virginia, today's eastern Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia to the battle of Kings Mountain, South Carolina, site of the Kings Mountain National Military Park.

The history and culture of Burke County is preserved at this museum in Morganton, NC. Located at 201 West Meeting Street, visitors to the museum will find artifacts, documents, and objects representing Burke County’s heritage. The museum website has images of daily life in Valdese, Morganton, and the countryside of Burke County. The museum is home to the Morganton Rail Road Depot, open Wednesday through Friday from 2-4 pm.
