Housed in the Old County Jail in Newland, the Avery County Historical Museum collects, preserves, and displays photographs and historical artifacts of the people of Avery County. Rooms in the museum are dedicated to special topics such as the Mountain Medicine Room with its display of medical instruments and the Mountain Tools and Trades Room which “provides a glimpse into the hand labor that built Avery County.” Students will also enjoy seeing how children went to school in the old days. The museum is open on Fridays from 10:00am to 4:00pm and Saturdays 11:00am to 3:00pm. It is located at 1829 Shultz Circle. For more information or to schedule a visit, call 828-733-7111. There is no admission fee.
