Roanoke River Lighthouse
A new addition to Plymouth, North Carolina's landscape is a reproduction of the original 1866 Light Station. Operated by the Maritime Museum, this lighthouse is like no other on the coast and is a treat to visit.
There have been several lighthouses built to help sailors find safe entrance to the Roanoke River since 1835 when Congress funded construction of a light vessel. In 1866, the original Roanoke River Lighthouse was built, but unfortunately burned that same year. Other lighthouses were built to replace it and the last functioning lighthouse was sold into private ownership and moved.
The Roanoke River Lighthouse is a replica of the 1866 light station and has been built with “remarkable detail.” In the future, there will be exhibits in the Maritime Museum which is located across the street. These exhibits will show the history of the lighthouse, its keepers, and its importance to transportation. Get tour tickets at the museum and call (252)217-2204 or (252)793-1377 to schedule a group visit.
