Hoop ball
Students must move very quickly to try to get three balls in their hoop. This game can be played by grades one through four and may be played by large groups (30–50). This game requires students to use problem solving skills while getting a great workout.

Learning outcomes
Students will:
- problem solve to get three balls in their hoop
- demonstrate quick coordinated movements
- demonstrate good hand/eye coordination
- show good sportsmanship
Teacher planning
Time required for lesson
30 minutes
Materials/resources
- seven hoola hoops
- eight foam balls
Pre-activities
Recommend warm-ups (your choice). I prefer a ten minute warm-up to music using different movements and speeds, for example walk, skip, hop, jump, gallop and slide.
Activities
- Divide the class into six groups.
- Arrange the hoops with one in the middle of the room with all balls in the hoop.
- Spread the other six hoops about ten feet away from the center hoop in a circle formation.
- Each group sits one behind the other behind one hoop, not too close to their hoop.
- One player from each group will go at a time. All others remain seated.
- On “go” the standing players all go to the center hoop and get a ball to bring back and put in their hoop. After that they may go to any of the seven hoops and get a ball. The objective is to try and be the first to get three balls in their hoop. They may carry only one ball at a time.
- Student should exhibit good sportsmanship while participating in this game. A sense of accomplishment is achieved when they successfully get three balls in a hoop.
Reminders: All other players must remain seated and not interfere or help with the balls during each round. The rounds go very quickly, so no one waits very long to play. I do not keep team points, but this may be added for a variation. I find that the children are excited just trying to be an individual winner.
Assessment
- Observe to make sure the children understand the rules.
- Assess for good sportsmanship as the children are taking balls from the others’ hoops.
