A lesson plan for grades 4–5 Healthful Living
Learning outcomes
Students will:
- learn to roll a ball with accuracy.
- learn to pass a ball with accuracy.
- learn to shoot a ball into a goal with accuracy.
- develop social skills within a group for participation in games and sports.
Teacher planning
Time required for lesson
30 minutes
Materials/resources
- 4 to 6 different colored basketballs or -playground balls
- 1 bowling pin
- At least 2 basketball goals
- Tape or cones (4 to 6) to mark starting spot to roll ball
Pre-activities
- Students will have practiced the “chest pass” for basketball.
- Students will have practiced shooting basketballs in goal.
Activities
Teacher
- Divide class into 4 to 6 groups.
- Set bowling pin in the center of the gym floor. Using tape or cones, mark 4 to 6 starting points 15 to 25 feet from the bowling pin in a circle formation. Each group of students line up behind their starting point.
Students
- On the teacher’s command “roll.” The first person in each group rolls the ball toward the bowling pin.
- The person who knocks the pin down retrieves the ball and lines up in front of a designated basketball goal. The other students in that group line up behind that person. The person shoots the ball at the basketball goal, gets the ball and gives it to the person that is next in line, and goes to the back of the line. The second person then shoots the ball, gets the ball and gives it to the person behind them, and goes to the back of the line. This rotation continues until the whistle is blown or the command “stop” is given. One point is scored for each successful shot.
- The other students who did not knock over the bowling pin retrieve their balls and return to their group. They “chest pass” the ball to each person in their group, who “chest passes” the ball back to them. If anyone drops the ball, the group must start over. After everyone in the group has made a sucessful pass, the group sits down.
- When the teacher sees that all groups are sitting down, the whistle is blown and the shooting team stops shooting.
- Teacher records points scored for the shooting team.
- The person who rolled the ball in each group goes to the back of the line and each group has a new roller.
- This rotation continues until teacher calls the game.
Assessment
Success will be determined by teacher observation of how quickly each group performs their passing skills with accuracy.
Success will also be determined by the number of shooting points a group makes.
Supplemental information
Comments
This lesson is great to reinforce basketball skills of passing and shooting. You can change the “chest pass” to “bounce pass” or “overhead pass.” All students are active throughout the game.
