  • A geometric field trip: Students conduct a field trip around the school (inside and out) looking for examples of geometric shapes. They record their findings using a digital camera and present their findings in a multimedia presentation.
  • Stamp it here, stamp it there, stamp it where?: Using a drawing program (Kid Pix), students will integrate English Language Arts and Technology Skills as they work with Geometry skills.
  • Paint tools & geometric figures: This lesson is meant to teach or review for third grade students the use of Paint tools. These tools are generic to many multimedia tools such as HyperStudio and Kid Pix. For the student who is unfamiliar with "Paint," it provides another tool of expression and illustration.
This lesson is also designed to reinforce geometry math skills. This ability to illustrate a three dimensional object on a flat one dimensional surface is important to enable the student to visualize geometry math problems.

Pre-activities

  • In whole group instruction, discuss the attributes of circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles. Ask students to describe the likenesses and differences among the four shapes.
  • Let students practice drawing these shapes in the air, on the chalkboard, and on paper.
  • Students will look for and identify these shapes in the classroom, on the playground, and in other parts of the school.

Activities

Day 1

(40 minutes)
Kindergarten students go to the school computer lab with their 4th grade “Reading Buddies.” They will each work at a computer with a 4th grade student. The older students have been asked to demonstrate to the kindergarteners how to use the straight-line tool and the circle and square tools to draw the 4 shapes and how to change the colors and sizes of the shapes. Then, the kindergarteners will practice drawing the shapes and making them different sizes and colors, with their 4th grade “buddy” assisting.

Day 2

(40 minutes)
Kindergarteners go to the computer lab with the classroom teacher and the technology teacher. Each student works at a computer. They log in and open the Kid Pix Studio Deluxe software program. The classroom teacher and the technology teacher review on the computer video projector how to draw a circle, square, triangle, and rectangle and how to change their size and color. The children practice at their computers.

Day 3

(1 hour)
The teacher calls small groups of children over to the classroom computers during Center Time. The teacher demonstrates how to open a file and how to print a picture. Children practice these steps.

Day 4

(1 hour)
The teacher calls 3 children at a time to work at the classroom computers during Center Time. The Kid Pix Studio Deluxe software program is open at each computer. Students are instructed to:

  • go to file
  • open a picture
  • go to the network-drive
  • open a template (see attachment)
  • type their name at the top
  • follow the printed instructions for drawing shapes and making them a certain size and color
  • print their work

Assessment

  • The teacher will assess the printed work of each student.
  • The teacher will give one-on-one help to any child that does not get 75% percent accuracy (3 out of the 4 shapes).
  • Each student will be able to type his/her name (by clicking the cursor at the top of the screen) with 100% accuracy.
