You go circuit
Station activities centered around the objective of changing levels and manipulating objects.
A lesson plan for grades 2–5 Healthful Living
Learning outcomes
Students will:
- learn body control while exhibiting a change of direction.
- be aware of moving through space while manipulating objects.
- demonstrate different locomotor skills while moving through space.
- demonstrate good sportsmanship and turn taking.
- demonstrate good listening skills while directions are given.
Teacher planning
Time required for lesson
30–40 Minutes
Materials/resources
- 6 task cards indicating the task at each station
- 14 cones
- 2 foam balls
- 2-3 balloons
- 3 basketballs
- 2 scooters
- 2 beanbags
Pre-activities
Students should have previous experience in dribbling a ball and knowledge of scooter safety. Students should be encouraged to return equipment to where it was found.
Activities
Class can begin with a 3 min. run/walk around the gym and a variety of toning exercises i.e. push ups, crunches, leg lifts and stretching before beginning station work.
Task Cards should be made for posting on the wall around the gym stating the name of each station. Explanation and demonstration precedes dividing the students into their stations. Stations are located at the corners and center sidelines of the basketball court. The class is stationed around the gym with 3 to 4 students at each station for their starting point. On the signal “go” the first person in each group performs the assigned task then proceeds to the next station to wait their turn and recover from the previous station.
Station #1: Crab Walk
Crab walk position placing a ball between the legs. One traffic cone is placed as a starting line, another cone is used for the turning line. Student tries to crab walk from one cone to and around the next cone then returns to the starting line. Hand the ball to the next person and crab walk to station #2 to wait their turn. Next person begins their turn.
Station #2: Balloon Volley
Student tries to make as many continuous hits as possible while changing from a standing position to a sitting position to lying down, then progressing back to a standing position. If the balloon hits the floor, begin from there and continue. Advance to station 3.
Station #3: Basketball Dribble
Place 3 to 4 cones in a straight line approximately three feet apart. From prior learning of the skill of dribbling, one student at a time uses a zigzag pattern of walk/run down and back through the cones while dribbling. Students are encouraged to alternate hands while they dribble between the cones. The ball is placed back at the start and the student advances to station #4.
Station #4: Cones
Set as in station #3. Students perform a dribble moving down & back through the cones as in #3 except they are riding on a scooter. Students go one at a time then advance to station #5.
Station #5: Beanbag Balance
Four cones are placed on the floor as in #3 and #4. The student starts in a standing position and places a beanbag on any body part. The student starts following a zigzag pattern between the cones. At the second cone, legs are bent and they continue a Groucho Marx walk. At cone #3 they change positions to a crawl, still maintaining balance of the beanbag. Then at and around #4 an alligator crawl back to #3, baby crawl to #2 and stand to walk to #1, all the while maintaining balance of the beanbag. Balance is more important than speed. Advance to #6.
Station #6: Ball Roll
From a seated position, use a foam or sponge ball and roll it around and on the body keeping continuous control of the ball. After rolling the ball for a count of 20, move to a standing position while continuing to maintain contact with the ball and continuing to roll it around and on the body for another count of 20. The count should be as per one a second with continuous movement & contact maintained with the ball. Return to a seated position, again maintaining contact, control, and movement with the ball for another 20 count. Advance to Station #1 if you have not been there.
Repeat if time allows.
Assessment
Teacher observation and student feedback.
