Learning outcomes

Students will:

  • demonstrate and practice racquet control
  • demonstrate and practice ball control
  • demonstrate a knowledge of the rules and scoring system

Materials/resources

Pre-activities

  • variety of stretching exercises — 10–12 minutes
  • walk/jog activity — 10–15 minutes
  • introduction to the game of tennis

Activities

Students will be given a skill sheet. Each activity will be explained and demonstrated.

Students will partner up and do nine different skills:

  1. shake hands
  2. tennis ball dribble
  3. air dribble
  4. dribble the lines
  5. string catch
  6. bump ball
  7. net bump
  8. ball pickup
  9. edge ups and downs

Assessment

Students will self assess using the activity sheets located in the Supplemental section of this lesson plan. Teacher should observe and review students’ completed activity sheets. Students cannot be expected to master skills in one class period.

Grade 9–12

  • Goal 6: The learner will demonstrate competency in a variety of movement forms and proficiency in a few to gain competence towards lifetime physical activities (NASPE Standard 1).
    • Objective 6.02: Participate at a competent level in at least one individual or dual sport through small-sided games or exphysiological concepts.
    • Objective 6.04: Engage in various duties as they pertain to games and sport such as but not limited to the sport education model (official, team coach, and equipment manager).
