  • Frosty friends: Students will draw snowmen using various tools in the illustration component of their program. Our students use KidWorks2 by Davidson but others may be used instead. They will then write original stories to accompany their illustrations.
  • The Alphabet Tree: After reading The Alphabet Tree by Leo Lionni to students, the students will retell the events on a flow map. Then using Kid Pix software, each child will choose an event, illustrate it, and write a caption for it. The students will then put their events in order in a Kid Pix Slide Show they can present to the class.

Activities

Day 1

  1. Divide class/classes into collaborative groups. (mix ability levels)
  2. Ask students to select a teacher or staff member in the school to write about. Encourage students to collectively and mutually decide on a person they will enjoy writing about as a team.
  3. Have students browse samples of biographies written about famous people and biographies written by other children.
  4. Brainstorm a chart listing the pros and cons of various biographies. The students should analyze the biographies for types of content, timeline order, transition words, and sentence structures.

  4. Select direct quotes to use in the biography.

Day 4

Students will:

  1. Order the events of the person’s life they are writing about using a brainstorming tool such as a timeline or a past, present, future worksheet.
  2. Compose the biography in a word processing document. (Teacher may wish to model an example of a biography prior to the students beginning to write their own. Emphasize transition words and sentence structures.)

Day 5

  1. In the edit mode of Netscape Composer, demonstrate how to copy text from a word document and paste into a web site.

  3. Publish the biographies to their school web site using cut and paste.
