Learning outcomes

Students will:

  • count using one-to-one correspondence.
  • add 2 numbers up to 10.

Teacher planning

Time required for lesson

45 minutes

Materials/resources

  • dominos
  • paper
  • pencil
  • graham crackers
  • peanut butter
  • raisins

Pre-activities

Students should be able to count using one-to-one correspondence. Students should be able to write the numbers 1 to 10.

Activities

  1. Use an overhead projector and show a domino.
  2. Turn the domino vertically. Ask students to count how many dots are in the top section and how many dots are in the bottom section.
  3. Write an addition equation to reflect their response. Example: 3+5=8. Give each student 8 dominoes.
  4. Have students turn their dominoes vertically. Students count how many dots are in the top section and how many dots are in the bottom section and record their equation and answer.
  5. Teacher gives each student a sheet with 8 vertical rectangles on it that look like dominoes.
  6. Students have to draw the dots for the top and bottom section for each domino and record their equation and answer.

Assessment

  • Domino sheet that each child completed
  • Teacher observation

Supplemental information

Comments

Students can make their own dominoes by taking a graham cracker and putting peanut butter on it. Then they can put raisins in the top and bottom section for the dots.

  • Goal 1: Number and Operations - The learner will read, write, and model whole numbers through 99 and compute with whole numbers.
    • Objective 1.01: Develop number sense for whole numbers through 99.
      • Connect the model, number word, and number using a variety of representations.
      • Use efficient strategies to count the number of objects in a set.
      • Read and write numbers.
      • Compare and order sets and numbers.
      • Build understanding of place value (ones, tens).
