Faces tell feelings - Part 1 - Understanding URLs
In this lesson, students will learn what a URL is and use URLs pointing to art sites that contain works they will use in their next art class as they begin a cooperative unit on facial expressions in works of art.
A lesson plan for grade 3 Computer/Technology Skills
This lesson plan was designed as part of a collaborative unit between art and technology teachers. The other lessons in the unit are:
- Faces tell feelings - Part 2 - Observations
- Faces tell feelings - Part 3 - Drawing facial expressions
- Faces tell feelings - Part 4 - Computer Animation
- Faces tell feelings - Part 5 - Typefaces
- Faces tell feelings - Part 6 - Emotions collage
Learning outcomes
Students will:
- take a mini virtual field trip
- learn what a URL (uniform resource locator) is
- use a web browser
- properly type a URL into the location bar of a browser
- identify the URL of a “found” page
Teacher planning
Time required for lesson
1 hour
Materials/resources
- Using URLs worksheet
- Optional PowerPoint presentation
Technology resources
- Computers for each student with internet access
- Computer for instructor
- Computer projector and screen or monitor large enough for whole class viewing (for use with instructor’s computer)
Pre-activities
- Review what the internet is, how there is more to the internet than just the web (email, FTP, etc.)
- Discuss how the Web allows us to take “field trips” without leaving the room.
- Explore with students a museum website, such as the Ackland Art Museum Site or the NC Museum of Art site
Activities
- Discuss what the acronym URL stands for (write on board or use attached Power Point presentation “What’s a URL”) and how it is similar to a postal address. (Letters addressed to your home always go to the same mailbox; typing in a URL always takes you to the same website.)
- Discuss the “http://: prefix. “http://” denotes a Web site, and since we are only browsing the Web at this time, we don’t need to type it every time we enter a new URL.
- Distribute Using URLs worksheet to students and review directions.
- Have students launch a browser on their computers.
- Assist students in locating the location bar on the top of the browser.
- Have students type in the first URL, circulating to ensure each student is completing this correctly.
- Allow students to complete the remainder of the worksheet on their own, again circulating to assist.
Assessment
- Part of the assessment will be immediate as the teacher circulates to make sure students are correctly entering URLs and successfully loading the correct Web pages.
- Additional assessment will occur as student worksheets are collected and checked for correct answers and correctly written URLs.
