Learning outcomes

  • dribble the ball the length of the floor while avoiding opponents and maintaining control of the ball.

Materials/resources

  • twelve orange bases or markers
  • as many balls as possible
  • sixteen tires or hula hoops
  • flags or markers for half of the class

Pre-activities

The students have had previous instruction in dribbling, defensive position, and shooting.

Activities

Warm-up

I do a warm-up before the game that allows the children to practice ball control while moving through space. The warm-up is called “Switch.” Every child has a ball. When the music starts playing, everyone dribbles in his/her own space. When the whistle blows, everyone must switch balls without double dribbling.

Game

Setting

  • Create a dividing line through the middle of the gym. This line separates the teams. If you are on your side of the gym, you cannot be tagged.
  • Each team needs a safety zone about fifteen feet in front of the basketball goal on the opponents’ side of the gym. The safety zone will stretch all the way across the gym from side to side. After you pass the safety zone line, you cannot be tagged.
  • At the very back of the safety zone as close to the wall as possible set up your tires. In each tire put as many balls as possible.
  • Slightly behind the goal set up a holding pen or jail house for people who are caught on the other team’s side. All trespassers will go into the holding pen.

Rules and game objectives

  • As long as you are on your side of the gym, you are safe.
  • Your goal is to sneak onto the other team’s side and cross to their safety zone.
  • When you reach the safety zone, you may take one ball.
  • You have to dribble the ball back to your side without being tagged or losing your dribble (double dribble).
  • If you are tagged or lose your dribble, you must replace the ball and report to the holding pen.
  • There are two ways to get out of the holding pen:
    1. When a teammate makes it to the safety zone, he/she may exchange his/her right to take a ball for the right to rescue a friend. All he/she has to do is hold up the hand of the person he/she intends to help and walk him/her back to their side. They both get a free walk to safety.
    2. If you have several teammates in the holding pen, you may wish to save them all. You have to gamble your freedom in order to save the whole group. After you reach the safety zone, select a ball. Move to the foul line or other designated shooting area. If you make the shot, the entire group gets a free walk back to safety. If you miss the shot, you must join your teammates in the holding pen.
  • Any balls that are successfully brought back to your side are stored with your team’s balls.

Assessment

  1. Assess if the student is dribbling under control using proper form. Check to make sure ball is kept at waist level and the finger “pads” are used to control the ball. Eyes should be up watching for obstacles.
  2. Assess the students’ form while they shoot free throws.
    • Check hand placement on the ball. Check that elbows are in and the dominant leg is slightly forward. Check that the wrist is cocked and power hand (dominant hand) is under the ball.
    • Check the rotation of ball as it leaves the hand. It should have reverse rotation and proper arc.
    • Check the knees to assure student is using legs to generate power for the shot. Student should bend down and push back up as the shot is being made.

Comments

Any time a person is tagged during the game, have him/her raise his/her hand so everyone knows he/she has been tagged.

If you wish to add more skills into the game, allow chest passes instead of just dribbling to move the ball back to your side.

The best thing about this game is the incentive for cheering for your teammates. The people in the holding pen really get into cheering for the foul shooter.
