Respect and responsibility character traits: Cut and paste activity

Using 20 different quotations that are out of sequential order--each with a relationship to the respect and responsibility character traits--students are to cut and paste the text in ascending sequential order, save, and print.

Materials/resources

• Responsibility and Respect word processing files
• ClarisWorks 4.0, Microsoft Works, Microsoft Word, or other word processing application
• Reaching Into the Past word processing file

Technology resources

• PC or Mac Computer Lab
• disks or file server
• printer
• student data disks (optional)
• computer with projection device (if available but not necessary)

Pre-activities

• Use the file called Reaching Into the Past to teach students the MOVE or Cut and Paste methods. Emphasize text must be selected at the very beginning or end of the text block to avoid losing or splitting the text. Students may use the mouse, primary & secondary buttons, or Menu bar, Edit Commands to cut and paste the text to a different location. Use the term clipboard memory that holds the text that has been cut temporarily until you tell the computer where to paste it. Teacher may want to cut a clip art graphic from a newspaper ad, place it on a real clipboard, pick another spot on the newspaper ad and glue (paste) the clip art in a different place. Relate the concept to the computer’s clipboard memory as you have students go through the process.
• Students must already know how to name and save a document.
• Students will need to be taught the difference between the delete key and the backspace key.
• Students will need to be taught line and punctuation spacing rules for keyboarding.

Activities

1. Open the Responsibilty character trait attachment to students’ computers.
2. Use the Save As command to save the two separate files.
3. Go through step by step procedures of moving text from one place to another within the same document. Have students try this for practice. If student completely loses one of the quotations, exit, do not save the document, and open up the same document again.
4. Have students cut and paste the 10 “Responsibility” quotations in ascending order with only one line of space between the quotes.
5. When students are comfortable with using the procedures, open the Respect character trait document.
6. Have students cut and paste the 20 “Respect” quotations in ascending sequential order having only one line of space between the quotations.

Assessment

A perfect paper (hard copy) or screen document should have all twenty quotations in correct sequential order with only one line of space between the quotes.
