  • Biomanufacturing: An inquiry lesson in growing cells: In this lesson, students are introduced to the biomanufacturing industry. To understand the intricacy of biomanufacturing pharmaceuticals, students will complete a cell growth activity. They will grow yogurt bacteria in milk media to try to produce lactic acid and adjust variables to try to optimize cell growth and the amount of product produced.
  • Good medicine: Students will examine changes in technology, medicine, and health that took place in North Carolina between 1870 and 1930 and construct products and ideas which demonstrate understanding of how these changes impacted people living in North Carolina at that time. To achieve these goals, students will employ the eight intelligences of Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences Theory.
  • Port Discover: Students will enjoy visiting this new hands-on science and health center which is geared to the pre-k to fifth grade curriculum.

LEARN NC is in the process of compiling our best instructional resources to help educators teach their students about health and the human body. We are currently developing additional resources, refining the collection, and filling in gaps.

Lesson Plans

Do you know your body?
Students learn to identify different body parts and how they move. They explore moving and using these parts in general and personal space. (Grade K Healthful Living)
Systems of the Human Body
In this Science NetLinks lesson, students use an online interactive activity to learn about the concept of separate components working together to build a body system. In addition, this lesson focuses on activities to help students learn that body systems work together to build the functioning human body. This lesson could be used in conjunction with instruction on the human body and/or systems. (Grade 3 Science)
Skin as an organ

In this Science NetLinks lesson, students examine the science behind skin. Students will examine the skin and how it functions as an organ and as part of a larger body system. In order to do this lesson, students should be aware of other organ systems and have knowledge about the anatomy of the human skin. (Grade 7 Science)
Changing lifestyles and heart health
In this Science NetLinks lesson, students examine and evaluate changes in diet and lifestyle from prehistoric to modern times and how these differences have spurred the development (and better treatment) of heart disease. They then use their knowledge in a debate between students representing hunter-gatherers and modern students. Students also critically examine their own diets.
