On the LEARN NC website, resources that can be used by students are called “learning materials.” You can access them in a number of ways:

1. Site navigation menu

On the site navigation menu in the left sidebar, select “Learning Materials.” You can browse learning materials related to popular topics by clicking on any link in the tag cloud. The “List all tags” link below the tag cloud takes you to a complete alphabetical list of tags, browsable by first letter.

2. Search bar

You can also search for learning materials on a particular topic by selecting “learning materials” in the drop-down menu next to the search bar at the top of the page, and then typing in keywords in the search bar to the right.

3. Advanced search

To do a more specific search for learning materials for a particular curriculum area or grade level, use the advanced search form, which can be accessed by scrolling to the bottom of any page on the site and clicking on the “Search” link.

Find resources…

If you’re looking for resources about a particular subject, use the “Find resources” section to type in your keywords. If you’re looking for any resources that can be used by students in a particular curriculum area for a particular grade level, leave the “Find resources” section blank.

Grade and subject

Select the desired subject and grade from the drop-down menus. To search only by subject, leave the grade level set to the default — any grade. Likewise, to search only by grade level, leave the subject set to any subject.

Include general resources?

Your response to the question “include general resources?” determines how broad or narrow your search results will be.

Not all of our resources are catalogued by grade and curriculum area. Many resources, such as photographs and some best practices, aren’t specific to any grade level and might be used in various curriculum areas. We don’t think it’s helpful to list every grade and subject for which a resource might be used — instead, we list only those grades and subjects for which a resource was designed.

If you select include general resources, when you search for a particular grade and/or subject, you’ll also find resources that could be used in a variety of contexts. If you’d rather find only resources that were designed for a particular grade and/or subject, select find selected values only.

If you’re doing a general search for learning materials that doesn’t include a keyword search, selecting include general resources will return a list of results that includes items from our multimedia library. Because there are thousands of images, audio recordings, and video recordings in the multimedia library, this can be an overwhelming list of search results. Choosing “find selected values only” will return fewer results, but they’ll likely be more relevant to your search.

If you are including keywords in your search, choosing include general resources can enhance your search results by returning related images and other media.
