Transylvania Heritage Museum

Students will learn the importance of heritage when they visit this museum in the mountains of Transylvania County. Its exhibits celebrate the history of the area and and take visitors back in time.

  • Why is the past important? As an introduction to the study of North Carolina's archaeological heritage, students will use personally owned object to share the importance of their past and connect this importance with reasons why the human past is important.
  • Postcards of the past Students will participate in Heritage Day activities that will enhance students' awareness of their heritage. They will take digital pictures of activities to include on a web page, and research and report on information gathered. Students will create a web page to present their information.
  • Storytellers in the Mountains of North Carolina Students will study five famous North Carolina storytellers: Jackie Torrence, Ray Hicks, Donald Davis, David Holt and Sheila Kay Adams. They will research how their stories were collected and how they developed their storytelling styles that distinguish them from other tellers.
  • Craft Revival: Shaping Western North Carolina Past and Present This web-based digital history uses primary source documents such as letters, photographs, and other objects to tell the story of the handicraft revival in western North Carolina between 1895 and 1945.
  • Crafting North Carolina: A Hands on Exploration of North Carolina's Hand-made Heritage North Carolina's geography, history, and resources brought to life through the crafts of the state.

The Transylvania Heritage Museum“houses temporary and permanent displays of heirlooms, artifacts, genealogical exhibits, vintage photographs, and other exhibits reflective of the history and heritage of the county.” On permanent exhibit is “Cascadia: Land of the Waterfalls.” Other exhibits, such as “Living off the Land” and “Decoration Day,” change periodically and include artifacts, realia, timelines and more.

Transylvania Heritage Museum is located in Brevard, North Carolina at 189 West Main Street. Admission is free. The museum is open Wednesday - Saturday, 10 AM - 5 PM. To find out more or to schedule a visit, call (828) 884-2347 or send email to heritage@citcom.net.
