Course description

This course will prepare you as you take on the role of a LEP Coordinator or ESL Teacher. You may be a new ESL teacher or have been assigned the role of a LEP Coordinator without receiving any training. Although you may already know theories or strategies for teaching ESL students, this course is like a manual to teach you the policies, procedures, and required duties that accompany your job dealing with LEP students specifically in NC schools. All material in the course is based on North Carolina LEP policy and is created with the input of the DPI ESL Consultants.

Course objectives

Specifically, this course will:

  • walk participants through the LEP identification process including what determines which students should participate in the ESL program, what initial test is required to determine status, and what tasks must be completed during identification.
  • discuss LEP student placement.
  • provide guidelines about the W-APT (initial testing), LEP team meetings, LEP testing accommodations and the ACCESS for ELL’s annual assessment.
  • explain testing, policies, and procedures for LEP students.
  • assist in understanding ESL students emotional, academic and cultural issues and challenges that all play a role in learning English.
  • provide an overview of various job descriptions and roles that are often assigned to participants.
  • supply teachers with reliable resources for supplemental information/assistance including acronyms pertaining to LEP/ESL in NC.
  • explore the growth of ESL students in NC.

Audience
This course is appropriate for all new LEP Coordinators and new ESL teachers working with or administrating programs for English language learners in North Carolina public schools. If you already have LEP experience, consider taking LEP Training 102 instead.
Time commitment
Approximately 1-2 hours per week
Prerequisites
You must be a new LEP Coordinator or new ESL teacher actively teaching in a North Carolina school.
