Lesson planning for English Language Learners using the WIDA/ELP Standards
This course provides ESL and regular K-12 classroom teachers an opportunity to plan lessons using the new NC Standard Course of Study for Limited English Proficient students known as the WIDA/ELP Standards.
Course description
Do you need help adjusting to North Carolina’s new standards for teaching English language learners? North Carolina has adopted the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) and English Language Proficiency (ELP) standards for English language learners. This change will affect almost every teacher in North Carolina.
This course will show you how to plan lessons using WIDA/ELP Standards, exploring the WIDA Standards Resource Guide.
Participants will explore scaffolding lesson objectives for different language proficiency levels, arriving at a common view of what elements are essential to a good lesson plan. The instructor will assess participants’ regular participation in class discussions, the quality of their research, and the completion of lesson plans within a unit of instruction.
In addition to enhancing classroom teaching, using the WIDA/ELP standards to create language objectives will be especially useful to teachers working with the SIOP Model.
This course is offered online to give busy ESL and regular classroom teachers more flexibility than they would have in a face-to-face classroom experience.
Course objectives
Title III of No Child Left Behind holds school districts accountable for annual, measurable achievement objectives regarding progress and proficiency in the English language, and adequate yearly progress in reading and mathematics. The goal of this course is to provide teachers with strategies for effective classroom instruction based on the WIDA/ELP standards in order for English language learners to be successful on the ACCESS annual state assessment and grade level state assessments.
