Visit the Hickory Nut Gap Farm in Fairview, North Carolina to learn about farming, soil, and more. Family owned for four generations, the farm grows organic blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, and black raspberry plants as well as apple trees. They also grow edible mushrooms. There are also animals to pet: piglets, calves, goats, ponies and ducks.

Field trips to the farm teach students about plant growth and soil fertility as it relates to food production. They will learn about soils as the building blocks of all our food, how seeds germinate and grow into plants, and how plants are harvested. Each student will take home a kit of soil and seeds to germinate at home or in the classroom. All activities correlate with the North Carolina Standards.

The field trips can be scheduled from 9-11 Tuesday through Friday from September to mid-October. After the lesson, classes will have the opportunity to eat lunch in their party shed and play by the creek. The cost of field trips is $5.00 for each child and teachers and chaperones are free. Scholarships are available.
