Microsoft Office Mix is an add-on for Powerpoint that allows teachers and students to create interactive multimedia presentations featuring audio, video, slides, inking on slides, interactive activities, and interactive assessments. The Mix team at Microsoft Research contacted LEARN NC and asked us to recruit a team of expert educators to create example Mixes. These Mixes demonstrate how the tool can be used to provide instruction, assess understanding, and offer professional development. Mix creator bios

Elizabeth Bunin
Elizabeth has thirteen years of experience in the fifth grade classroom, with a concentration in Language Arts and Social Studies. In 2008 she was a Teaching Fellow in the Virginia Experiment: Teaching American History Grant. As a Fellow, she researched, designed, and published the digital narrative “The Instrument of Democracy” which traced the role of the banjo in American history. Her instructional interests include inquiry and project based learning, Virginia and U.S History, in addition to novel studies. She lives in Afton, Virginia with her husband and two children and personal interests include hiking, cooking, and enjoying good music.
Evelyn Chalecki
Evelyn graduated in 1984 from Columbia University with a Bachelors of Science degree in engineering. She has worked 20+ years in the Information Technology industry for companies such as AT&T, NCR, and Cisco. In 1995, Evelyn was part of a start-up company, Amteva Technologies, which was purchased in 1999 by Cisco Systems. Throughout her career as an engineer, systems consultant, product manager, and product marketer, she has found real joy in describing how technology works and why it matters to both technical and non-technical people. She joined the faculty of Grymes Memorial School in Orange, Virginia in 2009 to teach instructional technology.
Beth Coleman
Beth Coleman taught first grade for five years in a variety of school settings. She began in Durham Public School, moved to Orange County Schools and ended at Central Park School for Children in Durham. She obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and she received her Masters in Elementary Education with a concentration in mathematics from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2013. As a teacher, Beth was particularly interested in incorporating equitable and transformative pedagogy within her classroom through building collaborative relationships with students, parents, colleagues and the community. Beth works to foster an inclusive and democratic classroom where children develop a sense of agency and compassion. She will explore these ideas further as she pursues her PhD at UNC-Chapel Hill in Cultural Studies and Literacies.
Jenny Grabiec
Jenny has been an educator for over thirteen years and started her teaching career in New York State as a third grade teacher. She has transitioned into many roles including Computer Resource Specialist in Virginia Beach City Public Schools, Instructional Technology Resource Teacher and and then Instructional Technology Specialist in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Currently, Jenny serves as Director of Instructional Technology at a K-12 independent school in Charlotte and has had the privilege of leading a one-to-one iPad/Mac rollout with students, faculty, and staff. The students at her current school have average to above average intelligence, but have been diagnosed with specific learning disabilities; primarily dysgraphia, dyslexia, language processing, executive function deficits, and/or attention deficit disorder. Technology is being utilized to help enhance instruction and personalize learning for these students. Jenny also led the first one-to-one iPad pilot in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in a middle school classroom of ESL newcomers back in 2011, when the iPad 2 was first released. Jenny is an Apple Distinguished Educator and CEO of Tech Girl Savvy, LLC.
Kim Mellor
Kim is a National Board certified elementary school teacher in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She has 17 years of teaching experience, and in 2012-13 Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools selected her as their District Teacher of the Year. Kim has served on her school Leadership Team as well as two district level committees, one focused on designing math curriculum aligned with Common Core standards and the other focused on developing a curriculum template based on the Understanding by Design Framework. Kim also represented North Carolina teachers as a Teacher Ambassador at the 2014 Institute for Emerging Issues Forum and was recently selected to participate in the North Carolina Governor’s Teacher Network to research best practices in the classroom and design professional development for teachers across the state. In addition to her B.A. and M.Ed. in elementary education, Kim also holds a master’s degree in Higher Education Administration. She formerly served as Assistant Director of a university Career Center and taught adult literacy at a community college, an experience that drives her interest in college and career readiness.
Brad Rhew
John Thompson
John Thompson began his teaching career in January 1994 as a business education teacher at Burlington Cummings High School. The following fall he was hired to teach business classes at West Stanly High School and has been there since. He teaches Multimedia and Web Design, eCommerce I and II (Honors), and Advanced Business Studies. As FBLA advisor and varsity boys basketball coach, he is in contact with a variety of students on a daily basis.

John has a bachelor’s degree in Business Education from Appalachian State University (Go Mountaineers!) and received his National Board Certification in 2001. He is a member of the North Carolina Business and Information Technology Education Hall of Fame, is a former Stanly County Teacher of the Year and in 2009 was named North Carolina Business Education Teacher of the Year. He has taught a variety of online courses for LEARN NC, NCVPS, and is currently the Stanly County Schools Online Coordinator.

When he’s not glued to his laptop working with online classes, John enjoys fishing and spending time with his lovely wife Emily and their pug Ivey.

Barbara Vinal
Barbara (Packales) Vinal holds a Masters in Technology Education from Lesley University, a Bachelor’s in Music Education from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, and holds a certificate in online instruction through the Carolina Online Teacher program (COLT) through LEARN NC. She has been at Fred Olds Elementary School in Raleigh, North Carolina as the General Music teacher and Technology Integration Specialist since 2010. She has been a music educator in Maine, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Texas at both the Elementary and High School levels for 25 years.

Mrs. Vinal was a member of the Maine Department of Education Learning Results Review Committee in 2007, which developed the current state standards in Visual and Performing Arts. The Maine Music Educators Association honored her as Music Educator of the Year in 2010. She has presented at Music and Arts conferences in multiple states and at the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) Eastern Division Conference. She currently sits on the Executive Board of the North Carolina Music Educators Association as the Technology Chair. She provides workshops on technology integration in the Arts classroom, assessment in the Fine Arts, and in developing standards-based curricula

Kara Watson
Kara is a high school librarian at Carrboro High School in Carrboro, NC. She has worked in the Chapel Hill Carrboro City School District since 2006. She earned a BA in International Studies from UNC-Chapel Hill and a Masters in Library and Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh, where she also worked in the Reference and Instruction Department of Hillman Library. Prior to that she worked at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh in Reference Services. She worked to establish a digital citizenship curriculum in her school district and her work was featured in a Huffington Post article called “Cyberbullying Protection: Librarians as Cyber-Arms.” Kara is passionate about serving young adults and the people who teach them. In her free time she enjoys having adventures with her family, reading, and DIY projects.
