This edition contains lesson plans about the fundamental concepts, processes, and issues of archaeology, as well as essays for the teacher with detailed information about four periods in North Carolina's ancient history.
  • Tree-ring dating: In their study of dendrochronology, students use activity sheets and a discussion to apply principles of dendrochronology to determine a tree's age and to recognize climatic variation. They will also analyze and experience how archaeologists can sometimes use tree rings to date archaeological evidence and study past climates.
  • ACC basketball: The students will use ACC basketball statistics to practice the process of converting fractions to decimals then to percents and will learn how to create and edit a spreadsheet. They will then use this spreadsheet to analyze their data. This unit is done during the basketball season.

The Atlantic Coast Conference in partnership with Guilford County teachers have developed these units for grades K–8. While the lesson plans are based on ACC Women’s Basketball and are meant to can be taught within the context of the tournament, their focus on math, science, social studies, language arts, character development, and physical education make them useful and interesting to students any time of the school year. This year the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament will be held March 6–9. School Day Games are scheduled for March 6 and 7.
