LEARN NC

K–12 teaching and learning · from the UNC School of Education

Greetings, I am the seventh grade teacher at Concordia Christian Day School in Conover, NC. I just graduated in May from Concordia College in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Yes, this is my first year teaching and I am loving every minute of it. I created this activity while I was student teaching last winter because most of my students disliked fractions. As a result of this attitude, my students did not want to work with them and learn how to conquer fractions. At the age level of fifth through eighth grade, I did not see many opportunities to use manipulatives. As I was playing a game of “Mexican Train” with my family I noticed how the dominoes look like fractions. One thing led to another and here you have Domino Fractions. Enjoy!

Domino Fractions
This is a review activity on the lesson of adding and simplifying fractions. This activity will provide a new approach to seeing a fraction and simplifying it, and the activity will allow students to set up and solve equations. This activity also works for subtraction of fractions.
