Mr. Leslie A. (Gus) Cothern, more commonly known as Mr. “C” to his students and community, has taught general music (grades 3-5) at Edgewood Elementary School, part of the Whiteville City Schools in Columbus County North Carolina, since August of 1989. Mr. Cothern has a 60 voice auditioned childrens choir that has performed for WECT Channel 6 in Wilmington, NC, and that has performed frequently for festivals and gatherings such as the Autumn with Topsail festival. The choir sings SSA music. He earned a BM from UNCG in 1988, and completed a MM from UNCG in 1992. He has published a lesson plan with the North Carolina Symphony, and has conducted three Columbus County All-County Middle School Chorus performances. Mr. Cothern serves as the Minister of Music for Whiteville United Methodist Church, and recently served as the Asst. Director for the Southeastern Oratorio Society. He is married to Sandy Cothern, an 8th grade middle school sciene teacher at Central Middle School (also part of WCS), and has a daughter, Sarah Elizabeth.

Exploring the families of instruments
Students will learn about the families of instruments and conclude the lesson by constructing a model instrument from one of the families studied.

Student composers with Music Ace!
Students will use the Doodle Pad (TM) component of Music Ace (TM) to create short compositions. Preparation will include some brief rules to allow success for young composers.
