Center for Acquisition of Spoken Language Through Listening Enrichment (CASTLE)
Durham, NC (http://med.unc.edu/earandhearing/pedsprogs/castle)
Professional development offerings
CASTLE offers a variety of trainings. The primary outcome is for participants to gain knowledge and skills in implementing strategies to teach children that are deaf or hard of hearing spoken language through listening. We measure this in two ways: a pre and post test as well as a teaching behavior skills document filled out throughout the internship process ( skills are rated on a 5 point scale).
- Classes typically serve fewer than 20 persons per session.
- Content may be aligned with North Carolina standards for professional development and is tailored to the needs of the individual student. Offerings are based on theory, classroom strategies and subject matter content.
- Sessions offered through one on one mentoring.
- Follow-up activities include a required evaluation of the professional development session, electronic follow-up, an in person follow-up, and a test at the end of the session.
- Materials are included in the cost of the workshops.
