The Center for Civic Education is an independent, nonprofit organization with offices in Los Angeles, California, and Washington, D.C.
The principal goals of the Center’s programs are to help students develop:
- An increased understanding of the institutions of constitutional democracy and the fundamental principles and values upon which they are founded
- The skills necessary to participate as effective and responsible citizens
- The willingness to use democratic procedures for making decisions and managing conflict
Ultimately, the Center strives to develop an enlightened citizenry by working to increase teachers’ and students’ understanding of the principles, values, institutions, and history of constitutional democracy.
The Center offers curricular programs that facilitate the above goals: We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution, We the People: Project Citizen, the School Violence Prevention Demonstration Program; Representative Democracy in America; and the Civitas International Programs.
The Center provides free professional-development opportunities to support its curricular programs. Professional development is available for elementary, middle, high school educators, university and college professors, members of the legal community, We the People Programs state and congressional district coordinators, and youth organization leaders throughout the nation and in selected sites throughout the world.
