Movement to make English the only language used in U.S. public education. English-only proponents argue that bilingual education and bilingualism threaten a sense of national identity and create divisions along ethnic lines.

Additional information

In 1998, California passed Proposition 227: an "English for the Students" initiative, replacing bilingual education with a requirement that all public school instruction be conducted in English with the possibility of a one-year intensive, sheltered English immersion program.
