Teachers play a critical role when helping immigrant children adjust to a new school life. Because immigrants' backgrounds and experiences are so diverse, it is important for teachers no to make assumptions and to get to know individual children.

Academic language students experience in school. CALP develops over a five to seven year period in the language acquisition of English (or foreign) language learners.

Additional information

CALP is more cognitivelly challenging than BICS in language acquisition, and is understood as a requirement for school success.
