T chart
Graphic organizer, shaped like a "T," used to separate information into two categories. A T chart can be used to compare and contrast two things, to list advantages and disadvantages, to separate facts from opinions, etc.
tangram
Traditionally used to create shapes and figures from seven geometric pieces (or tans): five triangles in different sizes, one square, and one parallelogram. Tangrams can also be used for other math functions, including measures of area and fractional parts and wholes.
teacher research
Intentional and systematic inquiry by a teacher or teachers in order to improve classroom practice. Teacher researchers begin with a question about classroom life, design and implement a research plan, collect and analyze data, and adjust practice to better meet the needs of students.
team teaching
Instructional strategy used across subject areas primarily in middle grades in a variety of methods. Teams are typically composed of between two and four teachers working collaboratively to plan thematic units and lesson plans in order to provide a more supportive environment for students. Also known as co-teaching or collaborative teaching.
Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK)
By first making decisions about the learning goals, activities, and assessments that will shape the learning experience, teachers can more easily envision opportunities to integrate one or more technologies. This is the basis of the TPACK model.
think-pair-share
Cooperative learning technique in which students think on their own about a topic, then pair with another student to discuss their thoughts. After partner discussions, each pair shares its thoughts with the rest of the class.
three-step interview
Cooperative learning structure in which students interact in pairs, interviewing each other about a topic. Students then take turns sharing what they have learned from their partners with the rest of their cooperative learning group.
tiered instruction
Teaching or applying the same Standard Course of Study objective in up to three ways to meet the needs of students at three levels of preparation: 1) students not yet ready for that grade level’s instruction, 2) students just ready, and 3) students ready to go beyond.
Title I
A federally funded program that provides state and local education agencies with financial assistance for schools with high numbers or percentages of students from low-income families. Schools that receive Title I funds must focus services on children who are failing or are most at risk of academic failure.
Title IX
Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 bans sex discrimination in schools receiving federal funds, whether it is in academics or athletics.
Tourette's syndrome
Disorder marked by impulsivity and tics, both motor and verbal (repetition of certain phrases, pressured speech).
tracking
Division of students based on academic skill level. Students are "tracked" into a particular course of study intended to match cognitive abilities and to prepare students for an appropriate post-graduate future (college or university, trade school, or employment).
