The Bear Who Wouldn't Sleep
Intermediate-level ESL students will apply facts from a content-based reading passage to create a short story about a bear who doesn't hibernate with his family.

Collecting Family Stories
Students will interview relatives and compose a family story on the computer. This lesson was completed in conjunction with two other lesson plans (art and media) using the same theme but could be used alone. Student work from all three lessons was compiled in a student portfolio.

A Geometric 'Field Trip'
Students conduct a 'field trip' around the school (inside and out) looking for examples of geometric shapes. They record their findings using a digital camera and present their findings in a multimedia presentation.

Hello Friend! Writing a Friendly Letter
Students will apply their knowledge of a friendly letter to compose a letter to send to their pen pals. Students will then type up their letters using the Kidspiration program.

Read It Backwards
One editing technique that writers can use to help them catch their own spelling errors is "Read It Backwards." In this lesson, students will learn a procedure for identifying and correcting the spelling of misspelled words.

Students will read The Red-eyed Tree Frog by Joy Cowley then plan and put together a Hyperstudio which retells the story.

Tarantulas
Students will read Tarantula by Jenny Feely. Then they will summarize what they have learned about tarantulas by writing descriptive words or phrases on a graphic organizer. Finally, using the Kid Pix Studio Deluxe (or other similiar drawing program), students will write sentences about tarantulas and make an illustration.

The Word Bank provides students with a classroom resource for "researching" the correct spelling of words that students want or need to use in their writing on a daily basis.

Word Closets give students an additional classroom resource for “researching” the correct spelling of words to use in their daily writing.
