Goal 1. Listening

The learner will comprehend spoken English in a variety of personal, social, and academic contexts.

Level: Novice Low

Students will use various forms of non-verbal communication to express ideas and demonstrate basic comprehension. They may point, touch, match, draw, act out, demonstrate an action, or play games to show their understanding. Learning objectives focus on greetings, classroom objects, letters, choral reading of simple text, copying simple words, distinguishing upper and lowercase letters, and following one-step directions with prompting.

Objective NL 1.04

Listen to oral presentations, stories, and/or familiar texts told or read to them and respond using physical actions or other means of non-verbal communication with modeling and prompting.

A'Planting We Will Go
This lesson is based on the book, The Tiny Seed, by Eric Carle. This story will be used to introduce the children to the concept that seeds change and grow into plants when conditions in the environment including temperature, light, water and soil are appropriate. Children will learn that plants produce seeds that can become new plants. Through extended activities, the children will experience first-hand the germination of seeds. They will become familiar with the parts of a plant and learn how each part works to produce a healthy plant.

Animal Adjectives
Students will describe animals as they review nouns and verbs associated with these animals. They will learn to use adjectives as they describe the animals. They will use this knowledge to write their stories about animals.

Who's Your Mama? A Family Who's Who
This is the first of two lessons that can be used with Cynthia Rylant's book, The Relatives Came. Students will read, draw, role-play and sing about family roles and titles.
