The learner will comprehend written English in personal, social, and academic contexts from print and non-print materials.

Level: Novice High

Students will begin to use simple words and phrases, while continuing to use forms of non-verbal communication to express ideas and demonstrate comprehension. They may use pictures, actions, and limited verbal responses to show their understanding. Learning objectives focus on familiar stories and retelling them with gestures and simple words, identifying parts of a book, learning the alphabet, distinguishing upper and lowercase letters, writing his or her own name, and following one-step and two-step directions.

Identify a few high-frequency words in environmental print and familiar text.

Supermarket Sweep Day 2
Students will participate in a supermarket game and follow a shopping list. Students will compare the quantity of items “purchased” and graph results. Students will also learn a song about shopping in a supermarket.
