- Students will use an amaryllis started from a bulb to explore the growth of the plant, measure, record and compare the growth of the leaves and the flower. They will enter the data on a spreadsheet and convert it into a graph.

- The students will measure the surface area and wrapper area of five pieces of candy. Using appropriate formulas and measuring techniques, they will complete information needed for a spreadsheet and database. Students wrap up the lesson by writing a letter to the company with the most wasted paper to explain how the waste affects them as consumers and a suggestion for correcting the problem.

- Measuring the waters
- This lesson plan uses an excerpt from an oral history about measuring flood waters during Hurricane Floyd to teach students about the many ways measurements can be taken. Students are given an opportunity to practice measuring with a variety of tools and evaluate their effectiveness.

- Rain forest animal movement
- Kindergarten students are naturally curious about a variety of animals. In this lesson, students explore the rain forest through books and online videos. Students will observe the movement of animals and then participate in imitation movements. They will then use nonstandard measurement to identify and record the length they moved.

- Water, water everywhere...
- This is a good beginning of the year lesson to review fractions, decimals, geometry (the number of degrees in a circle and drawing a circle with a protractor), graphing, and metric measurement. This lesson is a good way for students to meet their peers while working cooperatively in a task-oriented group. The watermelon you will be using for the activity is also a good start-of-the-year treat. Be sure to get an extra watermelon or two to share at the end of the activity.
