This lesson plan compares Alexander Hamilton, the first United States Secretary of the Treasury, and Aaron Burr, Thomas Jefferson’s Vice President. The lesson plan uses the duel between the two (at which Hamilton was fatally wounded) as an opportunity to contrast two early political leaders that have stark similarities as well as definite differences.

The Frog Prince: Compare and contrast
This lesson can be used with numerous pieces of literature, films, or sound material to develop viewing and listening skills and the students' ability to compare and contrast. One of the richest sources is in the area of fairy tales and folktales. This an especially good source if you can find a modernized version in recorded form to contrast with the more traditional written form. I have used the "Frog Prince" because of this factor and because it was part of the 4th grade language arts reading unit.

In this lesson students will select and read stories from some of the North Carolina American Indian tribes. They will compare and contrast two stories of their choice and complete a Venn diagram. After reading several American Indian tales or legends, students will then create their own legend using the narrative writing process.

This lesson plan uses first-person narratives from the Documenting the American South collection to demonstrate differences in perspective related to historical events, in this case, Sherman's march to the sea. It encourages students to compare the views of two southern ladies with that of a Union soldier.
