Desegregating public schools: Integrated vs. neighborhood schools
In this high school lesson plan, students will learn about the history of the "separate but equal" U.S. school system and the 1971 Swann case which forced Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to integrate. Students will examine the pros and cons of integration achieved through busing, and will write an argumentative essay drawing on information from oral histories.

Using percent of change to measure NC growth
Students will work in small groups to use the internet to gather data on the population growth for each of the 100 counties in NC from 1992 to 1995. From this data students will find the percent of increase/decrease for the counties they have been assigned. As a follow-up, the students will enter their data into a computer spreadsheet and from that spreadsheet, produce graphs of the information.

In the first half of the nineteenth century, a steady stream of emigration flowed from North Carolina to western states and territories. North Carolinians were pushed by a lack of economic opportunity at home and pulled by open land in the West. Only after the 1830s, when a progressive political leadership supported schools and internal improvements, did out-migration slow.
