A math story!
This lesson plan is designed to use a basic third grade math fact as a prompt to write and illustrate a math story. A hands on math activity using math manipulatives will serve as the focus and review for this lesson. A writing activity will serve as a conclusion as well as an assessment for understanding.

Piggin' out with money
Students will work with money manipulatives to solve word problems that involve adding money amounts and making change. The lesson is introduced with the literature book, Pigs Will be Pigs. After solving the problems posed in the book, the students will work with partners to create their "pig problems". Assessment will require students to solve similar problems on a teacher made worksheet. When time allows, each student will have the opportunity to go to an Internet site to work with money problems and games.

M&M Math provides students with hands-on activities. Students will be sorting objects, comparing whole numbers, writing fractions, performing addition, subtraction, and division problems with the use of manipulatives.

Mathematical translations
This lesson develops knowledge of algebraic expressions and their verbal equivalents. Students will solve real world and mathematical problem situations using simple algebraic concepts including variables and open sentences.

Body graphing
"Body Graphing" is an interactive graphing activity involving manipulatives to compare graphing results. With the use of ropes and unifix cubes students will learn to compare and contrast their body with classmates. The graphing activity can be extended to graph differences with height, hair and eye color, and other physical attributes.
