Investigating surface area
This is a hands on lesson best used to introduce geometry students to 3-dimensional figures. Students will have the opportunity to draw 3-dimensionally and create collapsible figures which can be used to develop the standard surface area formulas.

Paint tools & geometric figures
This lesson is meant to teach or review for third grade students the use of Paint tools. These tools are generic to many multimedia tools such as HyperStudio and Kid Pix. For the student who is unfamiliar with "Paint," it provides another tool of expression and illustration.
This lesson is also designed to reinforce geometry math skills. This ability to illustrate a three dimensional object on a flat one dimensional surface is important to enable the student to visualize geometry math problems.

Flipping around pentominoes
The students will use Unifix cubes to create the twelve different pentominoes. The students will join 5 Unifix cubes to make different shapes that will lie flat on a table or level surface. The students will then test for new shapes by flipping, sliding, or turning to create each different pentomino.

Polyhedra: Faces, edges, and verticies (3-D marshmallow models)
Students will review the names of 3 dimensional shapes, create the shapes using marshmallows and toothpicks, and find relationships among the faces, verticies, and edges of different 3-D polyhedra.

Inside, outside, and all around
Students will distinguish between perimeter, area, and volume. They will use tangrams and graph paper to create two-dimensional figures that will be measured for area and perimeter. By creating layers of centimeter cubes, the students will explore the concept of volume.

Dear Tootsie Roll company
The students will measure the surface area and wrapper area of five pieces of candy. Using appropriate formulas and measuring techniques, they will complete information needed for a spreadsheet and database. Students wrap up the lesson by writing a letter to the company with the most wasted paper to explain how the waste affects them as consumers and a suggestion for correcting the problem.

Differences across the curriculum: Part 2
This set of lessons can be used with "Differences across the curriculum: Part 1" as an integrated approach to exploring diversity with eighth graders. The unit will revolve around the use of the drama version of "The Diary of Anne Frank." Students will learn how diversity creates bias, which leads to conflict, where students confront their bias and practice tolerance. These parts reflect the four core curricula in an interwoven approach to teaching students to confront their biases, learn tolerance, and infer the impact of these on today's society. This activity, Part 2, is meant to augment the pre-reading activities completed in Part 1 in a Social Studies class.
