Body graphing
"Body Graphing" is an interactive graphing activity involving manipulatives to compare graphing results. With the use of ropes and unifix cubes students will learn to compare and contrast their body with classmates. The graphing activity can be extended to graph differences with height, hair and eye color, and other physical attributes.

Counting fun
This is a lesson on counting that takes 30 minutes. It is a good whole group activity for beginning counting, (forwards and backwards), and numeral recognition 1-10 to use early in the year. It is also good for math in literature. The activity can be extended as a counting game to use individually or small group during work stations.

Cubic expressions: Application to fluid transport systems through Murray’s law

The students will view a schematic image of a leaf and the veins of the plant that circulate fluid throughout the leaf. Using a simplified version of Murray’s law, the students will be able to mathematically model the fluid transport system of some plants and animals.

Irrational numbers: Application to natural frequency and resonance

After a discussion about the effects of natural phenomena on an object’s natural frequency, students will conduct an experiment to model resonance in plant stems and measure the natural frequency of pine trees. Through these activities, the students will gain an understanding of frequency, natural frequency, resonance, oscillations and square roots.

Jack-o-Light
We use pumpkins to demonstrate that fire needs air to burn. This goes really well with Fire Safety Week and our pumpkin unit. Also, we 'guesstimate' how many pumpkin seeds are in the pumpkin. We roast them afterwards by following a recipe. You can also create a Kids Pix picture of pumpkins.
