Created by Benjamin Bloom in the 1950's, his Taxonomy of Educational Objectives shows that there are six levels of the cognitive domain which he ranked from the simplest to the most complex. These competencies are knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Each of these competencies have a set of skills which define them. This website shows that this is a useful structure in which to categorize test questions. By determining the level of questions to be asked on a test, students can use the appropriate strategies when studying for the test.
