LEARN NC makes available its articles, lesson plans, and other original education resources free of charge via the World Wide Web to educators and students worldwide.

The following policies apply to all articles, lesson plans, and other original content published by LEARN North Carolina on its public website available via http://www.learnnc.org. They do not apply to external resources linked from the LEARN NC website or to resources re-published on our website from other sources. Educators wishing to use resources not maintained by LEARN NC should consult the copyright policies of respective owners and the Fair Use Guidelines for Educational Multimedia. These policies also do not extend to the content of online courses. Please contact us with questions, concerns, or special permissions requests.

Allowed use

Personal use

Users and guests of LEARN NC may download, print, and use articles, lesson plans, website reviews, and other original content published on the LEARN NC website for their own personal or classroom use and may share them with other educators for similar purposes.

Reprinting and redistribution

As a rule, we welcome educators, schools, and school systems to distribute our original resources in print for professional development or teacher collaboration. However, we ask that you first contact us so that we are aware of how our resources are being used and so that you may be sure that the resource(s) you wish to reproduce are, indeed, controlled or owned by LEARN NC.

In addition, full attribution must maintained on any printed copy of a LEARN NC resource, including author's name (if applicable), reference to LEARN NC, and URL of the resource and/or of the LEARN NC home page.

No permission is granted or implied for the republication of LEARN NC's resources on the World Wide Web or in other electronic formats. Please contact us for further information, or see our policy on linking, below.

Commercial use

Commercial use of lesson plans, articles, and related images, files, and other content from the LEARN NC website is strictly prohibited.

Linking

The practice of linking to public websites and web pages is not in general a violation copyright law, and no permission is required to do so, although it may be wise to ask permission for "deep linking" and framing. It is our policy not to grant permission to other organizations or individuals to link to our website, lest the granting of permission be construed as our acceptance of legal restrictions on the practice. However, we invite and encourage educators to link to the LEARN NC home page and resources as they see fit!

Ownership

It is the policy of LEARN North Carolina that sole responsibility for materials posted to its website rests with the individual who posts them. The author of each lesson plan is responsible for ensuring that both the text of the plan and any materials attached to it are not copyrighted by someone else; or, should the author wish to post copyrighted materials, for obtaining the necessary permission to do so. If LEARN NC discovers that copyrighted materials have been illegally posted to its website via a lesson plan, the author of the plan will be notified and the plan removed from the site until the necessary changes to the plan have been made. An author is considered to have posted a lesson plan when it is submitted for review to the editorial staff.

The author of all original materials posted within or attached to articles and/or lesson plans retains copyright to those materials, subject to the following restrictions:

  1. that permission is granted to LEARN NC to post the plan on its website for such time as it deems appropriate;
  2. that this permission is extended to cover all non-commercial use of the content, including republication via the World Wide Web, as long as proper credit is given to the author and to LEARN NC; and
  3. that should the author sell the rights to all or part of the lesson plan or its attached materials, he or she agrees to notify LEARN NC immediately.
