North Carolina Department of Public Instruction
NCDPI's Curriculum and School Reform Division has partnered with LEARN NC on numerous projects including online publishing of instructional resources and delivery of professional development, online and face-to-face. LEARN NC has also developed and hosted courses for students, funded by a grant to the Department and offered free of charge to low wealth and rural school systems as well as statewide.
The Division of Instructional Services News, Information, and Resources database formerly available on LEARN NC has been replaced by a new Division of Curriculum & School Reform area on LEARN NC. Questions and comments about specific resources provided here should be directed to NCDPI staff.
Thinkfinity
Thinfinity (previously MarcoPolo), a program of the Verizon Foundation, provides high-quality web-based Internet content and professional development to K–12 teachers and students. These lesson plans, provided by various partner organizations, are made available through Thinkfinity and have been aligned by LEARN NC to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
The National Research Center on Rural Education Support
The National Research Center on Rural Education Support (NRCRES) was established by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Through this grant a team of 20 researchers will conduct research studies and implement training for teachers in participating rural schools. The purpose is to work toward improved teaching, learning and student achievement in rural schools nationwide.
Helping NRCRES to achieve their goals, LEARN NC provides a variety of online courses to students and teachers in rural areas. These offerings range from high school courses that may not otherwise be available to students in some school systems (such as Advanced Placement and Latin) as well as teacher professional development courses.
NC ECHO
A program of the State Library of North Carolina, NC ECHO (Exploring Cultural Heritage Online) is the World Wide Web's doorway to the special collections of North Carolina's libraries, archives, museums, historic sites, and other cultural institutions. As the K–12 partner for NC ECHO, LEARN NC has developed and hosted teacher workshops featuring partner institutions, and facilitated the development of standards-aligned instructional resources that integrate primary sources and elements of digital history.
North Carolina in the World
North Carolina in the World is a statewide collaborative effort to strengthen K–12 international education. At the request of Gov. Mike Easley, the University of North Carolina's Center for International Understanding (NCCIU) coordinates the effort. More than 100 North Carolina education, policy and business leaders are involved to help prepare students to thrive in the global marketplace of the twenty-first century. To learn more, visit the NCCIU's website.
This resource center, available through LEARN NC, brings together hundreds of excellent web-based resources for teaching and learning about the countries and peoples of the world. The collection can be searched by region, appropriate grade level, or the type of media desired (such as images or video).
Curriculum, Music, and Community
The goal of Curriculum, Music, and Community is to draw on local music traditions to make the learning of school subjects more interesting, exciting, and meaningful for students. Through this project, music provides a link to students' local communities and school curriculum.
The CMC project is an educational initiative collaboratively designed and administered by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) Curriculum in Folklore, the UNC-CH School of Education, the Folklife and Arts in Education programs of the North Carolina Arts Council, and teachers and local arts council representatives from nine participating schools in six counties.
