Students were given the following prompt with no discussion but with ample time to read it. They then wrote responses independently, with limited time and resources (45–60 minutes was recommended).
"Some people say we receive three names: the one our parents give us when we are born, the one our friends give us, and the one we must make for ourselves." Write about this topic as it relates to you. Make sure you think through and plan your response before you begin to write. Be sure to organize your thoughts and incorporate specific examples and details to support your points.
Students from each of the high school grades were given this writing prompt. Two to five sample responses are available for each grade.
